Green Thumb

Day-29

NaPoWriMo-2026

Prompt:  In “After Turning the Clocks Back,” Jennifer Moxley links present with past, using a few well-placed details to invoke both a sense of the daily “now” and a nostalgic sense of the speaker’s long-ago life. In your poem today, similarly compare your everyday present life with your past self, using specific details to conjure aspects of your past and present in the reader’s mind.

Evenings

move in slow motion,

touching every minute with memories.

I sit,

with a cup of black tea, enjoying

the beautiful view from the balcony.

Gazing

lovingly

at the hibiscus, roses

chrysanthemums, periwinkles,

portulucas, purslanes

and the maze of colors.

All hues

taking me on a sweet stroll

to your loving hands. The way you

caressed each plant, each leaf

with tenderness in your eyes.

I remember

how you fretted,

shed a tear,

when,

one of your plants wilted

and died.

You insisted that we all plant

and tend till every bud smiled.

Now,

when you confuse between

present and past,

 never forget to inquire

if the blooms are blooming,

especially the chrysanthemums,

favourites of

yours.

I look at my hands and see, your

image, your legacy,

Maa.
